Morning a Gravina. From the ancient Rupestrian Church San Michele delle Grotte, one of the first centres dedicated to the worship of Archangel Michael in early Christianity, in the characteristic upper Medieval district of Fondovito, you will climb up to the monumental square Piazza Benedetto XIII with the basilica of Santa Maria Assunta. There you will visit the baptismal font and the robes of Pope Benedict 13th, born here in the 17th Century. The 17th Century Ducal Orsiniana Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio (also called “del Purgatorio” – of Purgatory) and the Ferdinandea Fountain.
Then, continue on to the Museum and Foundation of Ettore Pomarici Santomasi, with a visit to the museum’s collection and the Crypt of San Vito Vecchio and its frescoes, testimony to the presence of Basilian monks. Cross the bridge, viaduct and aqueduct Madonna della Stella over the Gravina canyon to the Pianoro del Padreterno, visiting the gorge and its Rupestrian surroundings.
At midday, lunch at a typical restaurant of Gravina with local specialities, Afternoon in Altamura: Tour to the old town with a stroll through the characteristic Claustri and the ancient courtyards. Visit the cathedral Santa Maria Assunta and to the Mu.Di.Ma. (Museum of the Women’s Galleries) In the evening, return to Matera, dinner, time for a stroll and overnight stay.

Trip to the Sasso Caveoso and visit the Rupestrian Churches (Santa Lucia or Madonna dell’Idris), and the Casa Grotta, an example of peasant civilization. Return to the Civita district crowned by the cathedral and walk along the 18th Century high street Via Ridola, dotted with Baroque churches.

Afternoon, visit the Crypt of the Original Sin, defined as the “Sistine Chapel” of southern Italy. On your return, stroll through the old town, visit the Churches of San Giovanni Battista (St. John the Baptist) and San Domenico. Dinner in a typical restaurant and overnight stay.
